How to save fuel while cruising

Posted

It’s not a mystery that marine fuel isn’t cheap, so you should do anything you can to make the most out of whatever fuel you have available. These five tips will help you save fuel -and money- and cruise for longer.

  • 1.Reduce the drag: Just like with cars, objects that affect the aerodynamic design of the boat will create more air drag and slightly reduce your speed and the miles per gallon of your engine. Remove any object that may cause drag to increase your boat’s efficiency.
  • 2.Unload unnecessary weight: The weight of your boat will also affect how much fuel it consumes and how fast can it travel. Remove any items you don’t need to make your boat as light as possible.
  • 3.Keep the hull clean: Regularly washing the hull of your boat will result in a smoother and more aerodynamic surface. A clean hull will reduce the drag and will increase the overall speed of your boat.
  • 4.Clean the propeller: You can also save fuel by keeping the propellers in good shape. Make sure that the blades are regularly checked for damage. If they are dented or have missing chucks, the transfer of power will be reduced.
  • 5.Slow down!: This might be an obvious tip, but the faster you go, the more fuel you will consume. If you are not in a rush, reducing your speed is the simplest way to use less fuel.

Even if all these things won’t increase your boat’s efficiency in a noticeable fashion, you will be able to see the results in the long-term, saving you lots of money.
