What to bring on the first aid kit

Posted

Once you are out on the sea, you will only have whatever you brought with yourself, and any kind of aid will be miles away and difficult to get to if anything goes wrong. This is why you should always have a first aid kit when sailing, with sufficient supplies depending on how far and for how long will you be travelling. Here are the basics that should always be in your first aid kid. Make sure that all the crew knows where the first aid kit will be located.

You want to have typical medical supplies, including antiseptics such as alcohol, chlorhexidine, antibacterial gel and saline solution. Likewise, you should have supplies for treating wounds, such as gauze pads, dressings, gloves, scissors and bandages. You should also have over-the-counter medicines such as Dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) to treat seasickness, paracetamol, and aspirin.

Remember to periodically check the expiration date on the medicine of the first aid kit and to make sure that all the components are sterile and in good condition before sailing.

You can buy different types of first aid kits with everything you might need, including a first aid kit manual. Finally, make sure that you are aware of any allergies or particular medicines attention the people you are going to be travelling with may need, and prepare accordingly.
