Lithium batteries have considerable advantages over conventional wet lead acid, Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM), and sealed gel marine deep cycle batteries. The most significant of these benefits is longer-lasting power.
Conventional marine batteries lose voltage as they are drained, which causes a trolling motor to gradually lose thrust. Once the batteries are drawn down to 50 percent they can no longer produce the voltage needed to power the motor. They still have 50 percent of their capacity, but as far as your trolling motor is concerned, they’re dead. And, when a conventional marine battery is drained to 50 percent or below, it will never return to its full capacity, no matter how long it is charged.
On the other hand, lithium batteries do not lose voltage as they are drawn down. They may be drained to nearly 100 percent before the voltage drops. Therefore, they can provide power twice as long and keep your trolling motor running at full strength throughout that time.
Also, a discharged lithium battery suffers no harm and can be recharged to its full strength. And, a lithium battery may be discharged and charged five or more times than conventional marine deep-cycle batteries. Add to this that lithium batteries weigh about half to a third of conventional deep-cycle marine batteries and that they charge in a fraction of the time.

LiFePO4 batteries must have a management system (BMS). Unlike conventional batteries, LiFePO4 batteries must have their individual (nominally 3.2 volts) cells equally charged, and charge voltage and current kept within safe limits. This system may be digital and built within the battery, be external – or not supplied. This fully integrated digital battery management system ensures long life and trouble-free service all safely sealed inside a lightweight box. Without that system, the battery will quickly be ruined. LONGER BATTERY LIFE
MPS lithium batteries are designed to perform in harsh conditions–freezing cold, scorching heat, or rough waters.
If routinely discharged to 50% or so, conventional lead acid and AGM deep-cycle batteries have a typical lifespan of 500-600 cycles. MPS lithium-ion batteries provide over 5x the cycle life at 80% DOD (depth of discharge) compared to standard lead-acid batteries, and can easily handle 2,000 cycles. This partially offsets their much higher cost.
